You do not know anything about this disease?
Well, you don’t have to wonder any more. All you have to do is to read this article and after doing so, your mind will be fed with useful information regarding this topic.
What It Really Is
This disease is an abnormal curved appearance of the penis which is caused by the formation of scar tissues, called plaque, in the body of the penis. The curvature will prevent the penis from having a straight erection or from achieving penetration. That is why the curvature is most visible during an erection. Meanwhile, the plaque is most visible while the penis is flaccid. The plaque is commonly larger than 1.5 centimeters.
This disease is a not so common connective tissue condition which affects up to 4% of Caucasian males who are 40-60 years old. But this disease can also happen to people as young as 18 years of age.
What Are The Causes?
There are a lot of studies done over the years but scientists still were not able to determine the real cause of this disease. Some research says that this is caused by a trauma to the penis which then caused an injury to it. The penis may be injured by either hitting or bending. Such injury will then trigger the scar tissue formation.
Some researchers also say that this may be inherited or passed from a parent to his child.
Others associate it with smoking, diabetes, high blood pressure, autoimmune diseases, frequent sex with weak erections, chronic inflammation and excessive collagen and fibrin in the penis.
What is certain is that this is not caused by cancer cells or by any sexually transmitted diseases.
What Are Its Stages?
This disease has two stages and these are the following:
Active phase: In this stage, you will experience painful erections and a curved appearance of the penis.
Secondary phase: The only symptom that you will experience here is your penis having a curvature. If there is pain, it will go away completely after some time.
How Is It Diagnosed?
This is commonly diagnosed through the use of physical examination and medical records. Your doctor will ask you if the symptoms appeared suddenly or slowly. This will help your doctor determine the stage of your disease. Also, to further observe your penis, your doctor will ask you to take a photo of it during an erection. This is because the curvature is mostly visible while having an erection.
You will also undergo tests like x-ray, which will let your doctor see the inside structure of your penis, and Doppler flow studies, which will let your doctor know if the blood flow to your penis is decreased or interrupted while having an erection.
There you have it, all the useful information about Peyronie’s disease that will make you better understand it. Now if you have other questions regarding this disease, it will be best to talk to your doctor.
