Eating the right kinds of food is crucial to maintain good prostate health and prevent possible complications. This is especially true if you are already past fifty. Men who are fifty years old and older should watch their diets and exercise regularly because they are more prone to developing prostate problems. Living an unhealthy lifestyle will only make your condition worse and might even lead to death. So before it becomes too late, you should modify your eating habits now and stop any bad vices you have such as smoking.
You should avoid caffeine. Hence, you should not drink coffee or any other beverages that contain caffeine as much as possible. Caffeine can increase the production of urine and enhance the contractility and sensation of the bladder. It can also irritate the prostate and increase the risks of diseases related to the prostate gland. Men diagnosed with benign prostatic hyperplasia, especially, should avoid caffeine because it can stimulate their already overactive bladder. It may increase urinary urgency and frequency or result in urge incontinence.
Then again, if you do not have urinary tract infection or benign prostatic hyperplasia, you may still drink coffee and other beverages that contain caffeine if you do it in moderate amounts. You should monitor your consumption and observe the reaction of your body towards caffeine. You may keep a daily journal or record, so you can keep tract of how much caffeine you intake each day. Also, if you are a habitual coffee drinker, you should not stop cold turkey. Do it gradually; because if you quit instantly, you might experience withdrawal symptoms.
You should also avoid beer. Beer contains yeast and hops. Hops can irritate your prostate while yeast can remain in your bloodstream, thriving and multiplying in your prostate gland. If this happens, you may be at risk of developing chronic prostatitis. Beer also contains prolactin, a hormone that is believed to increase the rate of the reproduction of prostate cells and cause enlargement of the prostate. If you drink at least a pint of beer each day, you would increase your risk of prostate cancer.
Likewise, you would increase your risk of developing prostate cancer by twenty percent if you drink two or more beers a day. Some researchers at the Curtin University in Australia reviewed various studies that show a link between developing prostate cancer and drinking. They found that those who drank fourteen or more beers a week had a higher risk of developing prostate cancer compared to those who drank less. While it is alright for most men to drink beer, they should do it in moderation.
Dairy should also be avoided if you want to live a life free of prostate-related diseases. You should not eat cheese, ice cream, and other dairy products. According to studies done by Tufts University and Harvard University, dairy product intake may lead to prostate cancer. Research showed that men who consume large amounts of dairy have an eleven percent higher risk of having prostate cancer than those who consume less.
